Science

The Science curriculum at the Springwell Harrogate plays to the strengths and experiences of our students. We emphasise practical, investigative work which will develop learners in preparation for their GCSEs and life in the wider world.

At KS3 and 4 students currently study all three Sciences; introductions to cells, tissues and organs; investigative techniques and energy transfers.

During their time with us they cover the following areas of study;

  • Learn about the building blocks of living things
  • Learn about the building blocks of the universe
  • Learn about the the universe and how it began
  • Learn how habitats vary
  • Learn how plants and animals are adapted to live in a particular habitat
  • Explore variation within and between species
  • Learn what makes up a cell and how they become organs
  • Learn techniques to investigate different types of materials
  • Learn to describe energy and how energy is transferred
  • Explore basic electricity and be able rearrange and use formulae.

In these areas students learn to frame questions to be answered using first-hand or secondary data and make qualitative observations and record these in a variety of ways, making use of their ICT skills. They draw conclusions from observations and explain them using scientific knowledge and will investigate variation using appropriate sample size.
