Land-based Studies

Is a City and Guilds Level 1 vocational option for Key Stage 4 pupils interested in practical outdoor work in a woodland environment.

Based in the Nidd Gorge area of Harrogate, students will study either 1 unit over 50 guided learning hours to qualify for an Award or 3 units over 150 GLH to gain a Certificate.

The units offered are:

  • Introduction to wildlife and conservation
  • Assist with the establishment of plants and sites in the countryside
  • Assist with the maintenance of plants and sites in the countryside
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of structures in the countryside
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of surfaces and ancillary structures in the countryside

In addition, students will learn and practise bushcraft skills in their weekly sessions. They will also participate in field trips to develop their skills and understanding; and camping expeditions to mountain and coastal environments to develop their knowledge of natural history and their appreciation for the natural world.
